Ripple Editor’s Letter | Winter 2020
The world seems to have turned on its head since our last Ripple in March!
Scientists have proven that the COVID-19 coronavirus is only 120nm (nanometers) small. To provide some scale, an oxygen molecule is 0.1nm and bacteria is 1 000nm. The width of a human hair is approximately 75,000nm. Isn’t it incredible to think that such a microscopic object can bring the entire world to a screeching halt?
What it has also done is create an opportunity to reevaluate so many things we take for granted. It’s highlighted our challenges and our blessings. Professor Renata Schoeman, renowned psychiatrist – who you might have seen interviewed on various news channels or on Kyknet’s KN Pandemie – wrote our feature story Self-care in the time a pandemic. She looks at why it’s important that we look after our emotional and physical well-being during lockdown.
Oasis Life has had an exciting month in June! In the first week, we handed over our Burgundy Estate site to contractors to commence with Phase 1 of this much anticipated R1-billion retirement estate. Read all the details in Ground breaking!, our Burgundy Estate story.
On Friday, 26 June, we had the great pleasure of handing over front door keys to our very first Oasis Life residents! Mr and Mrs Rolfe purchased house number 1 in Clara Anna Fontein and we will be handing over keys to nine more residents before the end of July. You can read all about it in our Clara Anna Fontein story We welcome our first residents.
With the first residents moving in, our Clara Anna Fontein operational team kicked into gear. Neil Barry, Operations Manager for Oasis Life Clara Anna Fontein, tells more about himself in Meet Neil, and provides insight into our hospitality philosophy.
This winter, Cape Town’s weather is experiencing a throwback to how winters used to be – stormy and windy with ample rainy days. Yet the in-between days are spectacular: beautiful, crisp and clear. The rain-fed bright green Durbanville hills stretch between the mountains – Stellenbosch’s Cape Fold mountain range towards the North and Table Mountain at the edge of the continent – with Clara Anna Fontein and Burgundy Estate on opposite sides of the hills. Idyllic!
Wherever you may find yourself: seek warmth, stay safe and look after yourself and one another.
