You might not like to be called a “pensioner”, because face it, you will be forever young, but when it comes to saving a bit of money here and there, being called a pensioner is not all that bad! Just flash your ID document and you can save a few bop.
We’ve rounded up a list of things you can do and places you can go that offer seniors discount. The list is by no means extensive, so if you know of any other discounts worth sharing, please get in touch.
VEHICLE
Automobile Association
The AA has an AA 60+ ADVANTAGE subscription at R93 per month, whereas the normal price is R140 per month. You save R47 per month.
Their AA 60+ premium option is R159 per month, whereas the normal price is R239 per month. You save R80 per month.
DIY
Builders Warehouse
You can get 10% off on a Wednesday with your Builders Warehouse card and ID document.
TRAVELLING AND OUTINGS
CapeNature
If you are a South African resident in possession of a valid ID, and you are 60 years or older, you qualify for CapeNature’s senior citizen discount of 30% off all self-catering and camping facilities.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
South African residents over the age of 60 get free entry on Tuesdays, except on public holidays.
Intaka Island in Century City
You pay only R16 to get entry to Intaka Island and R70 for a boat ride. There is also extended discount on groups of seniors. Make a day of it!
Sanparks
Sanparks offer up to 40% discount to seniors, from camping to chalets across the country.

Table Mountain Cable Car
For just R100, South African seniors can get their hands on ticket up the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. You could also hike up and take the Cableway down for just R50 one way.
The normal price is R390 return and R210 one-away, so you save big time!
You can also collect and redeem your free birthday Cableway ticket on any day of the calendar month in which your birthday falls.
City Sightseeing
Cape Town’s famous City Sightseeing offers seniors discounted prices on a variety of activities, such as a hop-on tour that includes Kirstenbosch or a canal tour through the V&A Waterfront with a breakfast stop along the way. Two Oceans Aquarium
The Two Oceans Aquarium offers a R50 discount for all South African pensioners. Just show your pensioner card and enjoy the magical marine life Cape Town has to offer.
You can also enjoy a free visit on your birthday or six days thereafter.
SHOPPING
V&A Waterfront
Free parking is available or 60+ from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 12:00.
You will need a pensioner’s card to unlock all kinds of specials in the V&A. To do this, make your way to the information kiosk with your identification document, fill in the application form and have it processed by the customer service team. Simply present your card at retailers to receive the special offers and benefits.
Game
Shop at Game any day of the week and get 10% off your purchase. This discount applies to any in-store purchase up to the value of R3 000 and is valid upon receipt of the shoppers Senior Citizens Discount Card – which can be applied for in-store. The discount does not apply to insurance products, cell phone contracts and airtime.
Makro
If you are 60 years and older, you qualify for an mSeniors’ card which enables you to save on selected purchases at Makro. Plus enjoy an even safer shopping experience with priority entry and checkout. You get xxclusive discounts of up to 10%* on general merchandise, up to 5%* discount on food including butchery, groceries, fruit and vegetables bur sadly no discounts are granted on alcohol.
Makro’s Senior Citizens Day, including its price discounts is offered everyday. Visit Customer Services in-store to register.
Food Lover’s Market
Many Food Lover’s Market stores offer a pensioners’ discount, one day out of the week. You can contact your nearest store to find out if they have a pensioners’ discount day, and which day it falls on. The local newspapers or daily papers also feature various specials by Food Lover’s Market.
HEALTHCARE
Dischem
The 60 Plus Programme is for senior citizens over the age of 60. The benefits include double points on all items purchased in store (excluding all exclusions and prescriptions) every Wednesday, one free blood pressure test a month (only if you get your chronic medication at a Dis-Chem Pharmacy), discounts on selected salon treatments and invitations to exclusive 60 Plus tea parties.
Clicks
As a ClubCard member, things just get better once you’re over 60 years old. You automatically become a Seniors Club member and can enjoy the benefits over and above those that come with being a ClubCard member.
These benefits include double cashback, that’s 4% back, every Wednesday and exclusive offers.
Discovery Vitality
Vitality members 65 years or older can now enjoy exclusive enhancements to the Vitality programme to help them get healthier with age-appropriate activities such as enhanced screening assessments, relevant exercise goals and healthy eating. ENTERTAINMENT
Ster Kinekor
Become an SK Member and you get 22% off every day. You also earn points by watching movies that add up to free movie tickets and combos. You get 200 points when you join as a kick-start to your first reward.
Nu Metro
You get a few rand off on various types of movies, for example, the regular price for a 2D movie is R95, but the 60+ price is R70. You save R25.

Spur

Spur Restaurants are individually operated, so just check with the restaurant first that they do have the menu available.
Depending on your municipality, you can qualify for 40% to 100% off your property rates.
The City of Cape Town has the following in place: If you are dependent on a pension or social grant, and are 60 years or older earning R4 500 or less gross income a month, you may qualify for a 100% rates rebate. Pensioners aged 60 years or older earning more than R4 501, but no more than R17 500 a month, may qualify for a 10% – 95% rates rebate.
